HIV + mothers gave safe birth of their babes at Khanakul Hospital

Dr. Saha is adoring the babes.

A public health centre aided two HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) positive mothers to have their babies born is no news to a developed country. But in India where law is required to ban “untouchability”, institutional delivery to HIV positive mothers is a distant dream.

Khanakul of Hooghly district under West Bengal sets an exception. Yesterday at Kahanakul Block Primary Health Centre an HIV infected mother normally gave birth a child with the help of Dr. Sushanta Pal (+91 99038 09784 ) and today another baby was surgically born from another HIV infected mother by Dr. Prasenjit Pal ( +91 98314 99139) under the direct supervision of Block Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sabyasachi Saha (+91 94329 21321).
Dr. Saha who is formally trained in AIDS related matters, has timely motivated his fellow physicians to take the risk by observing all medical protocol.

Suprabhat Chatterjee, Block Development Officer of Khanakul – l block hopes for a change now in the mind of those who ignores HIV patients while Arindam Niyogi, Sub-divisional Magistrate of Arambagh appreciates the humanitarian deeds of the doctors and expects more institutional delivery from similar incidents.

Some 240 years ago Raja Rammohun Roy was born here and fought lifelong for women rights. Now these three young doctors follow the golden path. That is perhaps the best tribute to him on the eve of ensuing Rammohun Mela scheduled to be held next year from 06 January to 10 January said a satisfied octogenarian of the locality.
