The basic objective of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is to provide employment opportunity to the cores of poor people of India by exploring every possible way of working avenues. May it be road construction by mud or mere gardening. The only condition is to generate employment to the needy commoners.
Here, Arindam Niyogi, the Sub-divisional Magistrate of Arambagh thinks differently. Having experienced over the years that the Bengal has been blessed with huge raining but the ground water level has been simultaneously decreasing resulting an increasing demand of sweet water he plans for rain water harvesting as part of MGNREGA programme implementing all over the state of West Bengal now.
To get the dream to be fulfilled he has arranged for a two days' work shop at the sub-divisional level held at Rammohun hall situated at the heart of Arambagh city and invited experts having the rank of Executive Engineer from neighboring district to train the Sub-assistant Engineers, Nirman Sahayaks etc. of all 63 Gram Panchayats areas. With advanced electronic gadgets and to the point answers, the participants make themselves enriched from the lively discussion. Besides, they ask many a question about the methodology of keeping books of accounts and practical measurements some of which are yet to be redressed.
Environmentalists welcome the initiative and hope for the next step when digging small wells, the rain water would be channelized in to the ground level to get the water level a little high to set aside the apprehension of another world war for adequate drinking water in the days to come soon.
